Vessel Inspections & Detentions
Vessel inspection data refers to Port State Control inspection reports and highlight deficiencies and mitigations.
While browsing, you can add this data and service to the requirements list, and then contact us with the summary. The added requirements can be seen at the top of the data basket.
Vessel Inspection Data refers to reports issued as part of Port State Control (PSC) inspections, which assess a vessel’s compliance with international maritime safety, pollution prevention, and crew welfare standards.
The results of an inspection can be:
A clean report (no deficiencies)
Recorded deficiencies (with or without detention)
Recommendations or required corrective actions
Data typically includes the vessel identity, inspection date, port of inspection, list of deficiencies, and any resulting enforcement action.
Coverage
Coverage is based on the activities of Port State Control authorities under regional Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs). The breakdown of the MOU’s is as follows:
Paris MOU
Tokyo MOU
US Coast Guard
Black Sea
Indian Ocean
Caribbean
Other smaller MOUs
Each year, thousands of inspections are conducted globally, but coverage completeness in aggregated datasets depends on:
Access to regional MOU data
Cooperation and transparency from national authorities
Regional political or regulatory changes affecting data access
Sources
Inspection data is sourced from:
Official MOU websites and publications
Port State Control authorities (e.g. Transport Canada)
Methodology
The process involves:
Inspection and reporting – conducted by port inspectors upon vessel arrival
Recording of deficiencies – classified into categories such as structural integrity, navigation, crew certification, safety equipment, pollution controls, etc.
Publication by MOUs, typically available in tabular or report format
Consolidation of data across jurisdictions, link inspections to vessel identifiers (e.g. IMO number), and apply standardised classifications
Why This Data?
Inspection data is a critical indicator of vessel condition, operator performance, and regulatory compliance:
Enables risk-based vetting of vessels and fleets
Supports chartering, insurance, and financial decision-making
Helps operators proactively identify trends or patterns of non-compliance
Benefits:
Provides tangible, externally verified records of vessel performance
Offers insight into owner or manager safety culture
Allows stakeholders to track improvement or deterioration over time
Can help flag vessels for additional scrutiny or investigation
