Vessel Emissions

There are a number of different calculations for emissions used across various regulatory bodies, industry groups and jurisdictions to provide data on emissions.

Emissions data provides a variety of standardised metrics to assess the carbon efficiency and environmental impact of vessels.

These metrics are used for regulatory compliance, sustainability reporting, and operational benchmarking. As regulatory requirements expand and market pressure grows, emissions metrics are becoming a greater focus for owners, operators, and charterers.

Coverage

We provide access to emissions metrics aligned with the most widely used frameworks including:

  • Carbon Intensity Index (CII) - IMO-mandated efficiency ratings (A to E) based on operational carbon performance

  • EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) - CO₂ reporting and allowance compliance for vessels trading in and around the EU

  • Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) - Design-based efficiency benchmarks for existing ships

  • Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) - Operational CO₂ emissions per tonne-mile

  • Annual Efficiency Ratio (AER) - Annualised emissions per distance travelled per DWT

Sources

  • Shipboard fuel consumption data, alongside other ship-based sensors

  • AIS-based voyage tracking

  • Technical vessel specifications (e.g. DWT, engine power)

  • Regulatory declarations (e.g. EU MRV, IMO DCS)

  • Supplier-calculated indicators derived from verified and modelled data inputs

Methodology

Each emissions framework follows a distinct calculation logic:

  • CII: Based on fuel consumption and distance travelled relative to cargo capacity, producing annual efficiency ratings

  • EU ETS: Requires operators to report verified CO₂ emissions and manage allowances accordingly via the use of carbon credits.

  • EEXI: Design-based metric using engine parameters, ship type, and reference lines for compliance

  • EEOI: Calculates grams of CO₂ per tonne-nautical mile using actual voyage and fuel data

  • AER: Calculates annual grams of CO₂ per DWT-nautical mile, useful for benchmarking fleet-wide performance

Why This Data?

  • Regulatory Alignment: Supports compliance with IMO and EU emissions frameworks, including CII and ETS.

  • Operational Transparency: Enables owners, charterers, and investors to track emissions performance at vessel or fleet level.

  • Risk and Investment Planning: Identifies emissions-intensive assets, supporting decarbonisation strategy, retrofits, and investment planning (e.g. scrubbers or future fuel engines)

  • Reputational Due Diligence: Assesses counterparties' sustainability performance, useful in partner selection and ESG reporting.
